Verna Mosquera Giveaway!

We hope you were inspired by the story of how Verna Mosquera developed her book. While her tips are what she learned about herself while writing this book, they (the tips)are relevant for just about anything in life. Whether you are thinking about changing your career or want to step outside of your sewing comfort zone, Verna tells us to believe in ourselves, ask for what we want and shows us we can do anything we set our mind too.

So now, push yourself to a new sewing technique or try something you have never done before. Comment below about how Verna's Tips inspired your sewing, quilting or crafting and we will send one randomly selected commentator a copy of Verna's book as well as her 30 pc. fat quarter from FreeSpirit Billet-Doux, her newest collection. Deadline for commenting is Monday, July 8. Happy 4th of July!

  1. I;m a self taught quilter, so I had to research many things: fabrics, tools, machines, notions, techniques, threads, etc... I've tried many different varieties and variations to find my own place in the quilting world.

  4. I love her tip about being brave and putting herself out there. I realized that if you can accept the worst that can happen then you have nothing to fear and everything to gain. I'm going to push forward with an idea I have concerning quilting.

  5. Color, quality, and beauty put together create treasured creative projects to use personally or to give as gifts. Verna Mosquera always says to believe that you can create beautiful things and this belief in yourself is your key to yet untapped challenges and fabric and sewing adventures.

  6. I loved her tip about being true to yourself and doing what you love. I tend to think I should do what others will love, but where's the passion in that? I'm learning, slowly! :)

  7. I loved reading her tips and her book sounds fantastic! The tip that resonated with me the most was that being scared is a good thing! I'm in the process of sewing a few table runners for a friend's wedding gift and I'm trying a few new techniques... definitely scary since her wedding is only a few weeks away!

  9. There was a lot of good advice in Verna's post. I like the advice to take one step at a time when a big project seems overwhelming.

  10. What a wonderful giveaway. An inspirational book and fabric to work with. Great.

  11. Verna's story was interesting as well as inspiring. What I took away from her story is that sometimes you have to just jump in and start something and not be hesitant about it. Since I have been wanting to learn free motion quilting on my home sewing machine I have decided to start learning and practicing it.

  12. Happy Canada Day (today)! I need reminding to believe in myself but sewing makes me try new things and what a sense of achievement when I do (and it works out!). Wonderful giveaway!

  13. Her #3 tip encourages me to be more confident in my own crafting style:) dont worry too much about what others might think about what we are making and just create!

  14. I liked her comment that being scared can be good. Fear often holds us back from soooooo many things and we give it way too much power. The book looks just lovely and I would love having a copy and some of that gorgeous fabric! Thanks so much for the giveaway!

  15. I write quick notes to myself when I'm making a pattern, then have no idea what they mean or sometimes what quilt they refer to. I'm keeping paper and pen with me, tip #5 is a good one, take the time to do it right.

  16. One thing that is evident by reading about Verna is that you don't become successful and creative by sitting around reading about it. You have to actually get up and do it!

  17. #2 Be Brave, I need a little more of that, I have a fear that other's won't like what I like and I am easily saddened when someone doesn't like my creative works.

  18. Two things stand out to me and that is the advice to be brave and to be true to your own style. In my own quilting process I've learned to appreciate my own way to doing things and to let myself try the designs that probably should have intimidated me, but I just didn't know better. Verna's fabric is beautiful. Hope I win.

  19. I'd love to "meet" Verna through her book! One of the projects I'd love to do for my little ones is a twin size quilt for each of them - someday!

  20. Her tip about doing what you love is the best. Life is so much more enjoyable in all aspects if you are doing what you love.

  21. She is right about being brave! Anytime you create something, you are being brave to follow your heart and have confidence. For me, just getting an embroidery machine, teaching myself how to use it, and making things for others was very brave! I couldn't have just read about it--I had to do it!

  22. Thanks for the giveaway. I loved reading the tips. These are things i can share with my daughter. I can get caught in the trap of perfection and I forget to enjoy the process.

  23. The one tip that stands out is #4 Being scared is a good thing. It will give me the ability to try new techniques like paper piecing and will also make me think about life situations.

  24. She said don't be afraid so I am trying to make some original softies as I have mostly used patterns before. Thanks for the lovely giveaway!

  26. I always enjoy reading anything that highlights a quilter's journey, and Verna's book is no exception. Instead of taking the easy quilting road, I'm going to push ahead and try something I've not done before. I'd love to make a Dear Jane quilt and now, I'm going to give it a try. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway.

  27. I love Tip #1-Timing is everything. Don’t jump into to something just because everyone around you is doing it. Wait for a time that is right for you.

It is easy online to get caught up in a group sew-along, but it is so frustrating to get in over your head - with quilting or just in life. Make your own path and calendar!!

  28. If the quilt on the cover is any indication this must be a gorgeous book!

  29. I am trying to be brave about trying new things and to take eachl project a step at a time. Verna's book sounds great, thank you for the chance to win a copy.

  30. It is so inspirational for other quilters to hear and bond with fellow quilters. Sometimes, when we go through trials we tend to forget about others who went before us and the ones who will follow after us. Quiler or not, i think the hardest thing a person can do is to believe in themselves and realize that no one or nothing is perfect. Thank youfor a wonderful giveaway. babscorbitt@gmail.com

  31. It was really interesting to read how she didn't immediately jump at the chance of a book deal - sometimes we have to wait until the time is right. I'm waiting for the right time for some dressmaking but I know that sorting our house out so I have somewhere to sew is essential first!

  32. #4 Being scared is a good thing. I'm always pushing myself to try new things. This works for all kinds of things, not just quilting. Thanks!

  36. I appreciated her advice about being true to oneself - do what you love and others will love it too. I make quilts for gifts and charity fundraisers, and I often second guess my color and design choices. Will the quilt be good enough for someone else? If I spend more time sewing and less time agonizing over choices, I will get more done. :)

  37. I loved reading about her & the tip about being brave & putting herself out there. This applies to living your life as well. I love quilting & now have a brand new sewing room after sitting in a small space in a corner of my living room for years. . . my very own sewing room! (Ok, my son left home & it has taken being really brave to let go & not cry but the room definitely takes the sting out of it.) I want to apply her tip to be brave in my sewing as well & learn free motion quilting. Thanks for a chance to win this gorgeous fabric . . . it would look so beautiful in my room!!!

  38. I was really encouraged by her tip to do what you love and also the tip to try new things

  39. I love #3. I taught myself to quilt, no books or websites or mentor, just a stack of fabric & a general idea of what a quilt is. I don't do things the way other quilters do & I don't make the same *type* of quilts that seem to be popular. I learned to be OK with that

  40. I loved all her ideas, but being yourself and doing it the way you feel happy is the best advice. There is no right or wrong here, just joy in what you do.

  42. I am just living everything in this book! I always do thinks my way, if a pattern says do "this" and I have a better way, I do mine.

  45. I lovelovelove that Verna encourages us to find our own talents. I just started quilting last year, and thought that i had to do things one way.......and only one way would be right. well, thanks to Verna. and a few encouraging quilter friends, I am now confident in my own abiblities and accept my novice stature. there is so much fun stuff to learn !!!!
