ReplyDeleteWhen I first started to develop an interest in quilting I bought some lovely blue, green and teal uneven stripped fabric for the binding on my first quilt. The more I played with it the more I loved it but when I went to go and buy more it was all gone and I have no idea who designed it or who manufactured it!
ReplyDeletemy very first quilt...at age 14, was from all the scraps of cl,othes that my mom made us growing up. oh, its a terrible quilt but i will never let it go...i just love the squares of the sherbet orange fabric with white boats on it. ohhh, the memories! fabrics can do that...remind me of a place and time...
ReplyDeleteI have so many favorites. I've been thinking a lot about Tula Pink's Neptune recently. I made myself a wall hanging for myself and out of the scraps I made a couple small wall hangings for my dad's beach houses. I just like the idea of having the connection of the same fabrics in both of our houses.
ReplyDeleteWow, what pretty fabrics! I just started sewing in December, and no one else in my family sews, so I don't have any hand me down fabrics, or anything like that. My favorite fabric I do have though, is from the Peace group by Michael Miller fabrics.
ReplyDeleteOh my! My favorite fabric changes frequently. Currently I love Heather Bailey's Nicey Jane. I received a half yard bundle for Christmas. I did hoard it for a while, but then I cut into it and am about to finish a quilt for my bed. Love it! ReplyDeleteI have a a set of fat quarters that I won from a blog giveaway... I just can't get myself to use them because they're so pretty, all folded, crispy, and looking colorful together. I have yet to find the perfect project for it. I'm not sure who the designer is, but it comes in bold colors and has birds and chairs/sofas on them! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI have a couple of pieces I really cherish. I have a small collection of Munki Munki I just haven't been able to cut into yet. I have to find the perfect project to justify cutting. :) Also, it's not a piece of fabric, but I have a braided fabric rug my mom made when I was little that I hope to never part with. She died when I was 13 and this rug is one of the few handmade pieces of hers I have. Thanks for the giveaway!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite fabric seems to be whatever I'm working with right now, though batiks are consistently at the top of my list. When I worked on my daughters quilt I was in love with a purple batik. My grandsons had a dark blue marble that I thought I'd use in everything.. Now I'm working on my sons quilt and I'm in love with the teal.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite piece of fabric has to be a piece of Alexander Henry scissors and sculls in the aqua colorway. I got it in a scrap pack a while ago when I first got back into sewing/quilting. It is OOP now, but I still snatch up other colorways when I see it - and I've been kind enough to send some of the aqua I had to another woman who also desperately wanted it!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite is Swanky by Chez Moi. I used that line for my first quilt along (a fence rail quilt) 2years ago. I love it so much, when I see it online, here & there, I buy it. I guess you could say I'm a hoarder when it comes to Swanky...lol!

My favorite fabric was for one of the first things I sewed for myself, an apron. It has a vintage, spring look of blue and yellow flowers. So cheery!
ReplyDeleteA gelatin printed fabric that I did is probably my favorite. It turned out so differently from anything that I have ever bought and I have been able to use it in several art quilts.

ReplyDeleteWhen we were young, my sister and I would pick out our favorite squares on a quilt that had been given to my mother from her grandmother. There was one tiny square with tiny pale pink flowers, i was always drawn to that one square. I have no clue why!
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother bought the most amazing fabric back in the 40s. It's charcoal gray with bright yellow, orange and lime green calypso dancers and palm trees on it. It was supposed to be for cafe curtains (does anyone have them anymore?) but now I think it would make a border for a wall hanging.

ReplyDeleteI am not sure who made this fabric, but my favorite has a red background and is divided into panels. Each panel has a different gold design. It looks very Asian. My second favorite is from my wedding gown. I have only boys and there is a family baptismal gown, so this fabric was something I didn't need to keep. I haven't yet cut into it.
ReplyDeleteMy mom bought me a Brother sewing machine and some beautiful fabric. Unfortunately, she passed away before she could show me how to use the machine. I have since then learned how to sew, but can't part with the machine, nor can I find a way to use the fabric! Thanks for offering the giveaway! The Summersault fabric is gorgeous!

ReplyDeleteI have fabric that I won't cut into right now. I do make doll clothes from fabric that matches dresses I make for grands. I finally cut up my wedding dress which I made to make christening hats for my grands. The dress at that time was over 30 years old. I still have some and will make hankies for grands to carry on their wedding day--something old. I make the dress in 1964.
ReplyDeleteA red flowered cotton I used for the back of a quilt I made. The quilt top was a red, white and blue antique top I bought at a flea market. Over the years the cotton has gotten very soft and, when my boys were little, it was the favorite blanket to snuggle in when they were sick. I was told that they felt loved wrapped in this blanket and would relax and sleep when using it.
ReplyDeleteI don't exactly have a favourite fabric. I love fabrics with vibrant colours and patterns and that feel nice to the touch. My mum and my aunt are amazing sewers and I learned some basics when I was younger. They did a lot of sewing for me as I was growing up. I finally decided I liked to design fancy dresses and designed my grad and wedding dress both which my aunt made from just a picture I drew. I then decided I better learn how to sew properly. I started probably 4 years ago doing random projects here and there. My mum taught me how to quilt and I made a beautiful quilt out of the laurel birch blue horses fabrics. I have also from there made a corset top for a dress and a few other things. I have plans for a couple of more quilts at some point once I get my craft and sewing room reorganized. These fabrics are just beautiful with nice bright colours and fun patterns. I would love to create some fun stuff out of them.

I went to highschool circa "pretty in pink" and bravely (cluelessly) made my own prom dress from my deconstructed eighth grade graduation gown...lets just say that I gave my prom date strict instructions...if you see a loose thread LET IT BE!

I have so much fabric in my stash that it is difficult for me to pick one favorite. I love Kaffe Fassett - I have so much of his fabric! And Amy Butler too. I am crazy about Pat Bravo's collections, they are beautiful. And Jennifer Pagnelli . . . I could go on and on. Perhaps one of my favorite pieces of fabric is one of Kaffe's - a polka dot batik design on purple (not like the newer polka dots, this is done the old fashioned method). I hate to cut into it because it is impossible to find anymore! Purple is my favorite color too!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite fabrics have long been the scraps that I still have from outfits she made for my sister and I over 40 years ago. There were the pink and yellow dotted Swiss dresses and the brown and red corduroy jackets with matching skirts (we were so grown up). When I started sewing for myself, there was always something that I "intended" to do with that little bit left over. Now, my favorites run to the richly colored fleeces and knits that I've purchased to make things for my 15-yr-od son (whose taste runs toward classic). Each time I look for something for a new project, I am blessed with the memories that go along with past purchases and the anticipation of what they can become.

ReplyDeleteMy absolute favorite piece of fabric, is a vintage piece with beautiful sunflowers on it. It is small and I haven't even thought of using it because I like it so much and I have no way of getting anymore. I have tried several times to locate someone that has more, but no luck.

ReplyDeleteWell, I don't think I have a favorite fabric, but I did find a piece of fabric this weekend that was sepcial. As I was cleaning my son's room I found a piece of fabric that my mother had given me before my son was born. It was actully the front of her baby bag when I was a baby. a cute teddy bear on it. I havent' done anything with it yet. Waiting for the right idea, but now my son has outgrown it. BUt still I need to do something with it. Thanks for the giveaway. I love the fabric!

ReplyDeleteI don't know if I have a favorite piece, but I do fall in love with certain fabrics and they become blankets or bedding for my daughter. I love seeing her tug around some of my favorite fabric. My husband makes fun of me because when I come home with fabric, my daughter exclaims "new blankie!"

ReplyDeleteMy mom had fabric left from her mom, who got it from an apron factory to use for the church projects. I hand stitched small squares to make a baby quilt for a friend (in 1971), but fell in love with it and decided to save it for my own babies. My grandmother had sewn enough Dresden plates together for a large quilt and my mom started to put centers in. This was all passed to me and I have plans to use the pieces for quilts for myself and my kids.

I have been sewing for many, many years and I find it very interesting to look at the fabrics in my "stash" and see how colors and designs have changed over the years. ReplyDeleteWhat fun fabrics. Especially nice since we're having the wettest spring in the last 20 years. My favorite fabric is some burgundy camel hair that I got back in 1979. Way back then it was $34 a meter and I could never bring myself to cut into it - just take it out and pet it every once in a while. Finally, in 1998 I made myself a jacket from it, trimmed with flying geese strips from teal and burgundy cottons. I wore it out and now I'm going to cut the jacket apart and use the camel hair fabric in something crazy quilted.

Hi, I'm Belle, my favorite fabric is a piece that my grandfather willed to me. It is a piece that the Phillipine government gave to him for his services as a doctor after WWII. I've never cut into it. It is silver blue with white weaving in the center and is meant for a man's shirt.
ReplyDeleteI have a piece of fabric that my Mom had made a dress out of for my Barbie when I was a girl (still have the dress and Barbie!). It's dark gray with little tiny pink flowers on it. I love this fabric and don't think I'll ever cut into it. When I go though my stash and find it I smile. I have many other favorites, but that is the best!

ReplyDeleteAs with clothes, I seem to gravitate to the same fabric colors and patterns and my fabric stash proves that! Then when I'm looking through my stash to find a fabric for a project I want to do, without fail every time, I say to myself, "oh, I don't want to cut into that, I might want it for another project!" So, I end up shopping for MORE fabric and consequently my stash is now out of control! Help, I'm a bonafide fabricaholic!!
ReplyDeleteI'm new to sewing so I'm only just building my stash. As well as my local Joann's, I have managed to find some great pieces of fabric from a thrift store called Out of the Closet. Right now I'm into color. My last purchase (Friday) was little red flowers on a teal background (for a dress), and a white, orange and pink stripe (for a skirt). The bright colors are very uplifting.
ReplyDeleteI don't play favorites, I believe all fabrics are created equal. Each one has a purpose and it's up to the person that is lucky enough to own that particular piece to find the correct purpose. Confession of a self-diagnosed fabric "collector"
ReplyDeleteMy favorite fabric is a piece with an embroidered edge I bought about 50 years ago. It is chartreuse and the scalloped edge is satin stitched in white with a row of white satin stiched daisies with the centers cut out. I was going to make a sleeveless sheath (like Jacqueline Kennedy would have worn). Now I am too old, and too fat...and my daughter never liked chartreuse, but someday I just might have a grandaughter who will.
ReplyDeleteIf I had to pick one fave fabric I would have to choose an older Amy Butler fabric from her Belle collection called Burgundy/Gothic Rose. It's just the right mix of sophisticated with a dash of whimsy with its bright colours.
ReplyDeleteTo identify my one most-favorite fabric would be impossible. I was fortunate to have a great-aunt who owned a fabric shop in the 1960s. When she closed the shop, she was left with yardages of some gorgeous fabrics (embossed cottons, glorious brocades, unforgettable lawns) that made their way into my stash. For a long time, I wouldn't cut them out, preserving them for "something special," until I realized that they would never become anything that way. So now, I view anything I make as "something special," which lets me enjoy the fabrics more often because they're not stuck on a shelf.

ReplyDeleteI love lots of fabrics, but my favorite piece is a large piece of navy polyester something that my mother bought in the late 70's, but never used. I found it in a bag with tons of fabric scraps, along with the pattern, thread and zipper she planned on using it for!

ReplyDeleteI'm really liking Amy Butler fabric right now, but I have a giant stash of scrap fabric my mom used to bring home from church when they worked on quilts for Lutheran World Relief. I made her a postage stamp quilt 80 X 100, and now working on one for myself.I wish those fabrics could tell me there story - some are so horrible, but you don't see that in the finished quilt!

ReplyDeleteI had a fabulous colorful batik with dragonflies on it that I couldn't bear to cut into--until I found a dragonfly quilt pattern that used large pieces of fabric. That was the perfect use! I love how the quilt turned out.

I am a quilter and have quite a stash, but among my favorite fabrics has always been the Fossil Fern line.
ReplyDeleteTo pick a favorite fabric would be like picking a favorite child. That being said, at the moment I do love a big bold MoMo print that I can't decide what to do with. I don't know if it is a skirt, a bag, or the back to a quilt. Too many hard decisions!
ReplyDeleteMy first fabric obsessions were the little squares of double knit in my Granny's quilts. She had bins and bins of the stuff that she would buy at garage sales and cut up, imagine every conceivable type of double knit there ever was! I think she inspired my love of bright colors and crazy patterns :P I have a precious bag of her squares, and someday I'll make something special out of them in her honor.

My favorite fabric is a piece of cotton that I have from my Mother. It is a white background with small clusters of red and blue flowers. When I was a little girl, she sewed a dress for me out of it, and made a trim in the front with blue rick-rack. I wish I still owned the dress, because it was one of my favorites. I can still picture it to this day. It had 3/4 bell sleeves, and I felt so pretty when I wore it, even though it was a simple design. I don't know if I'll ever have the heart to cut through what's left of the material. My Mother passed away from Alzheimer's 10 years ago, and there are too many memories attached to that piece of cloth.

ReplyDeleteI adore the Summersault fabrics! I love summer and this line captures it in a fresh way that reminds me of the free-wheeling summers of my childhood. I had shorts and blouses in some of those very colors!

I love all of them! :o) I started to sew recently and every piece of a fabric has a great value. I appreciate a lot all those japanese fat quarters which I'm not sure I can find again in the stores ant I try to cut just tiny pieces. But the most precious fabrics I didn't dare to cut yet are the fabrics from Les Olivades (Provence, France). They are made since 1818 by the same way, hand-made, printed color by color and therefore they are very expensive.
ReplyDeleteI adore the happy Summersault prints! I love summer and this fabric line captures it in a fun way that reminds me of free-wheeling summers as a kid--I had shorts and blouses in some of the same colors! It's great to have the sateens and laminates too, it really expands the possibilities.
ReplyDeleteMy first quilt was a gift to a dear friend and her hubby. It was a tied quilt, no big deal but after I had cut, pieced, inserted batting, backed it and tied it, I realized I had no earthly idea how to finish it, and no more fabric to make binding. So I carefully turned the edges of the top and the bottom (with batting) to the inside, and top-stitched around. it came out ok, but I have I have learned to plan a project all the way through before I begin!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite fabrics will always be from the Good Folks line from Anna Maria Horner. Those were the fabrics I used to make my first quilt ever! So they will have a special place in my heart always :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE fabric. It is impossible to choose one line. I love lots of the Moda fabric designers. I can't begin to know all the designers. I have just begun to really know how many different designers and lines there are out there. I was so limited in my stores before but now I am expanding and of course with the internet the possibilities are endless. Now if my money were endless.
ReplyDeleteI have soooo many favorites for different reasons....where I got it, who I got it from, the texture, the color, the print. I guess my most memorable piece would be the satiny trim on my "first" blanket. Powder blue, heavy, and oh so comforting. Isn't that what it's all about!
ReplyDeleteMy mom sewed like crazy when I was growing up, but it's funny that the fabric I remember best wasn't something she sewed for me. It was a swimsuit I wore when I must have been 5 or 6 years old. My favorite color in the world has always been green. The swimsuit was a green fabric with drums printed all over. I can't imagine that a drum-covered swimsuit was tres chic, but I LOVED that suit because of the fabric!

I love the Summersault fabrics as pinks and greens tend to be my nfavorite colors. I think my favorite story happened just this winter. I needed to make a quilt by May in queen-size for my new Daughter-in-law's shower. Of course, here it was the 2nd week of February and although I knew what design I was going to use, I had not bought the fabric.
ReplyDeleteI was traveling back from a Martha Pullen school with two other equally insane ladies. We needed to stop and strtch as we were driving from Alabama back to NJ!
We stopped at this wonderful quilting shop! Behold, there it was the perfect Batik and I tool=k the rest of the bolt!! I
I got that quilt finished and have enough "scraps" to make at least two more quilts.
I love fabric. period. But I especially love finding it at thrift stores. It makes me wonder who bought it first, and what was it destined to become, before it's fateful trip to the thrift shop...

ReplyDeleteMy favorite fabric has to be the two yards of shimmering blue silk that my husband brought back from Vietnam. I don't know that I will ever cut it, but it has a cherished place in my heart and makes me happy when I see it.
ReplyDeleteLast year I bought a beautiful retro-floral knit at a local shop while visiting family. My son (who was 18 months at the time) loved it too and always asked me to drape it on him. I made it into a wrap dress, which he always asks me to wear. He actually pulled it out of my closet this morning and said "Mommy wear dress?" Too bad I'm too pregnant to fit into right now! There's always next year!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite fabrics are some pieces of silk and cotton my daughter brought me back from a trip to Indonesia and Thailand. I need to find the right project for them. The colours are super shades of plum and lavender. I love the prints you had in the Summersault fabric.They would go with them.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite fabric is the Flea Market Fancy green seeds. I've used it up in Bee blocks and scrap quilt projects but have a 3" square up on my wall just to look at! I love Erin's Sunnersault collection as it reminds me of her Park Slope which is one of my favorite collections. I could go on with a few more!
ReplyDeleteWhen I got married I wore a flannel shirt that my hubby and I bought on a trip to Euro Disney a few years prior (we were living in Germany at the time). Over a decade later the shirt has been worn a lot and the cuffs/collar are quite frayed. However, I'm saving it in my closet for a special quilting or patchwork project down the road.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite fabric is a beautiful sheer sequined sari that one of my daughters brought back from India to adorn her sister's wedding gown. Second daughter wanted purple on her wedding gown somewhere and her older sister searched in India for a very special fabric. She brought home 3 saris to choose from and we all loved this deep eggplant sari with embroidery and sequins. I cut around the embroidery and added the sequined vines to the front and back of the bodice and we used a large piece of the sari to run down from the waist to the end of the train. I still love coming across the scraps in my stash!

ReplyDeleteI found a beautiful rich blue/green tapestry fabric in a patchwork design perfect for my new guest room; it was on a shower curtain, but THE perfect colors. A lengthy search yielded five shower curtains to get the yardage I needed to piece a duvet cover. I found coordinating blue velvet and braided trim, and also used the scraps to make banner window toppers. I love the result.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite piece of fabric is Carnival Bloom by Michael Miller, in the chocolate brown background with lots of bright pink, lime green, aqua and orange. Love it!!! Actually bought a quilt kit to get the fabric because it wasn't available in yardage. It's going to be curtains in my quilt/art studio. Plan to paint my walls in a orange to match one of the shades of orange in the fabric. I've been scouring the internet to find more of this fabric, so I can create a quilt to match. Would so love to win some of the Erin McMorris fabric. I've been quilting for over 30 years and hadn't done a whole lot for the past 5 or 6 years. But the new wave of fabrics that are on the market now have inspired me to begin creating again.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite fabric at the moment is a batik with lupine type flowers on it in blues, purples and greens. I love it because it combines favorite colors, with a favorite flower and a favorite type of fabric - batik. But I really just enjoy all fabrics...to go into a quilting store and just look at all the colors and designs is something I find very relaxing.

They are all safely tucked away in my hideout. I'm just waiting for that special project. And then just maybe I'll dare take out the trusty scissors...

ReplyDeleteWell, I have to say I love the cinnamon print. It immediately reminded me of summer wine spritzers which I am in need of right now. DH and I have been hosting our children and grandchildren for nearly a week - twenty people in a house normally so quiet and boring!

It's interesting to read all the comments. I have much in common with many. Though my favorites change, my most cherished will always be a hand spun, hand woven kitchen cloth from my grandmothers wedding chest. She monogrammed it with her maiden name. I never met her but every time I take it out for a look, feel and smell I feel very connected to her. I love making quilts and giving them to loved ones. I choose my fabric with care, after all I could be making a connection with someone who will never meet me. Thanks for the opportunity to win some of this very lovely fabric. Maggie
ReplyDeleteMy favourite fabric is piece of Chinese silk brocade that I was given by a friend about 35 years ago. I've never cut into it, but take it out to admire from time to time. It's a pale teal blue, and covered with what look like little incense burners and medallions. I think of my friend every time I look at it. A beautiful, old, treasured fabric that's also a memento of a beautiful, old and treasured friendship. What could be better!

ReplyDeleteNormally I am very much a fair-weathered fan when it comes to fabric. I have a favortie fabric or collection, and then when new fabrics are introduced, I quickly leave my proclaimed "favorite" fabric for the latest, newest thing out there.
ReplyDeleteBUT, I have to say that there is one fabric collection that I keep coming back to as one of my all time favorites, and that is Anna Maria Horner's Garden Party. It seems no matter how projects I make with it, I never get tired of it... green tablecloth and waltz rose are simply fantastic!

I have a piece of vintage cowboy fabric my mother-in-law bought to make my husband a shirt when he was little (my husband is vintage also!). It is so soft; almost silky. I love it but can't bring myself to cut into it.
ReplyDeleteOne of my all time favourtie lines is Amy Butler's midwest modern 2. I think i have a soft spot for it because I made my first quilt (a little sampler) out of it & fell in love with modern, bright, bold fabric. The rest of my class was very conservative and considerably older so they all raved about my modern approach, but were quick to add it wasn't their taste :D

I think my favorite changes daily. I have so much fabric from 30+ years of sewing, and quilting. It's like asking me to name my favorite child... there are days when I might favor one over the others, but I still love them all!!
ReplyDeleteI have favorite fabrics from three generations of women in my family. I have two large boxes of scraps from my grandmother - flour sack as well as clothing scraps probably spanning 50+ years of sewing - as well as two unfinished quilt tops and a box of quilt blocks. I have used some of the quilt blocks for pillows and appliques on aprons, etc. I also inherited my mother's fabric stash - which includes fabrics from the 60's, 70's and 80's. Like me, she was an optimistic seamstress with more ideas than time. I've used quite a lot of it for new clothes for my daughter out of vintage fabrics. And, lastly, I was recently given 6 pieces of beautiful elegant kimono fabric from my daughter's trip to Japan in October. I love these treasures from my family. The Summersault fabrics inspire me in a different way. The colors are beautiful and the prints are contemporary and fun!!

ReplyDeleteMy very first quilt was from one of those Amish Quilt Kits in a box from Barnes and Nobles. I had no idea what I was doing but I loved every moment of cutting and putting the pieces together all by hand! Since then, a friend showed me how to quilt with a machine...now I'm completely addicted.
ReplyDeleteI love all fabric especially the bright colors. My favorite quilt is a scrap log cabin quilt that I made. I used a lot of ugly ducklings in it but they turned into swans in the quilt.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite fabric is a flannel that I used to make my husband a bathrobe as a present for our 20th anniversary. The pattern was called "deer in the night" - beautiful like a winter night on a Maine mountain. When I gave it to him I wrote the name of the pattern and said it was for my "dear of all time". To this day,it's very special for me to see him wearing it.
ReplyDeleteLike many girls of my generation, I sewed a lot of my own clothes by my early teens. My parents traveled quite a bit then and before leaving on a trip to Hawaii my mother asked me what I'd like her bring back. I told her fabric (of course). This was the late 1960s. She stuffed her suitcase with 5 yards of the most amazing royal blue and deep purple barkcloth printed with a modern abstract design. All these years later I still have it. I thought it would be fun to recover a wing chair with it but I'm going to have to find something to coordinate as there isn't quite enough for that.

I must say that I LOVE LOVE fabrics. When I travel, I am always on the lookout for fabric stores. My husband of 46 years is very understanding and lets me buy buy fabrics. I now have a walkin closet full of fabric.
ReplyDeleteI like fabrics with lots of color that is why Free Spirit fabrics are so hard to choose from. However, I think the fabric that means the most is the one my husband picked out personally for my birthday when he went shopping with our youngest. It has a gorgeous medallion pattern I hope to highlight with beadwork.

She was born in 1910, and passed away 6 years ago at 95. I will never ever cut it up, or use it. I also have a piece of fabric - one yard of Alexander Girard alphabet in blue on white, that was picked as an exchange of a wedding gift 48 years ago. I can not bring myself to
cut it up, it's rolled in acid free paper.
Sooo Pretty! I love looking and dreaming about all the awesome fabric! Money is tight here as it is everywhere these days. But if I can't buy it right now at least I can look at it and dream! LOL Hey and you never know I might even win some! Thank you for the dreams!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite fabric stories happened when I was in school learning how to sew. It was my very first sewing class. The teacher had told us all to buy some fabric for a project we were to do. I had purchased a beautiful piece of white China silk with a very delicate leaf pattern. I was so careful as to not crease it, or in any way spoil it. I took it to class and showed it to the teacher. I was so careful in unwrapping it. I handed it to the teacher and in the blink of an eye, he took a pair of scissors to it, sliced it down the middle without measuring or caring and told me, "You owe the fabric. The fabric doesn't owe you." Since then, I have never been so careful with any fabric. july 11, 2011 elba n.c.
ReplyDeleteI love the picnic blanket pattern!! Thanks for sharing it!! My most favourite all time fabric is Jennifer Paganelli's Nuala toile in the red/aqua. A beautiful pattern and the colours just sing together! I wish I had bolts but I only had a half yard that I bought after it was out of print. I've used little bits in different quilts I've made. I'm so excited to see on the Sis Boom blog that the West Indies range has a similar fabric. Your offering such a great giveaway but I won't put my hand up for it because I'm already working on a quilt using the Summersault range. They are such fun, happy designs!

ReplyDeleteMy real favorites have already been made into something--a queen sized cathedral window quilt my Mom made me that has fabric from her life and our family's growing up years, as well as a scrap quilt from my great grandmother, who I never knew. I love looking at the different fabrics in that one--while I could never tell you what each one looks like, when I look at them, they are like the return of memory. Of course I have my favorite Amy Butler's and a Marimekko that are hard to cut, but the quilts are first place. They go beyond mere fabric.

I am so pleased and excited to have come across this line of fabric. It is exactly what I am looking for. Lately I have been sewing bibs and burp clothes for many friends and family and this fabric will be perfect for all the little girls in my life. My next adventure in sewing will be learning how to make skirts for my 1 year old daughter.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite is a piece of pink cotton lace that my mother bought me when I was 17. I have always thought it was the most beautiful fabric. My mother made my sister a dress from her piece but I've never been able to think of anything worthy. I still have it after many, many years and I look at it from time to time and daydream about what I could do with it.

ReplyDeletemy favorite fabric is a scrap of yellow gingham salvaged from a blanket my mother made me as a child. it's worn down now to a 4" square piece, but every time i see it it makes me think of my mom.
ReplyDeleteI went into a quilting store with a quilt that I designed inspired by the pattern on a Patagonia fleece. I talked with a woman that worked in the store to get some help. She laughed and asked me if I had ever quilted. I said No. She had me sign up for a class to make a pillow. I was hooked. I have been making quilts and pillows ever since. I also realized that if I had not met this particular woman I am not sure I would still be quilting. She was so upbeat and amazingly inspiring.

ReplyDeleteChoosing my favorites from the wonderful fabrics I've had in my life is almost like a mother choosing her favorite child! But I do have some favorites--they are the ones I have tucked away but rarely felt confident enough to cut into even even though I've been sewing for a number of years and quilting for about five. When I do manage to break down and sew one, I'm usually glad I waited for the perfect project.

My sister taught me how to sew when I was 8! Many years ago. When I found an old journal I was amazed at how much I sewed all through high school. Finding a box of scraps from way back or old patterns triggers all sorts of memories about events, favorite outfits, sewing teachers, fashion shows, ......just like hearing a song. Now I have a daughter who is attending a fashion college. And the legacy continues. I love it. I'll have to share this site with her too!
ReplyDeleteA couple yards of fabric, bright flowers on an orange ground. It's kind of ugly, but I've had it for years and have always meant to use it to make a backward-vest style apron just like my Grandmother had. Somehow I never get to the project, but every time I see it I think of my Grandma.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite fabric at the moment is the quilt I'm working on. It's full of hearts! It was made from a double quilt cover from a charity shop so I've no idea where it came from but it's gorgeous & everyone who sees me quilting it adores it!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite fabric is in a completed blanket that was sewn by my great grandmother. She was known at her church to take scraps and sewn them into potholders and patchwork blankets. This blanket is made with blue and white patchwork with red backing (also pieced scraps). It is well loved and I sometimes sit in front of the tv with needle in hand to mend the areas that are worn through.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite fabrics of today's generation are usually by FreeSpirit and Westminister because I love the high thread count and wonderful smooth finishes! They make great quilts, home Dec and fashions!! But my best loved fabrics were left to me by my grandmother! She passed away many years ago and I inherited aprons and other small pieces of clothing. The aprons just speak to me because of the memories I have of seeing her in them carrying eggs, moving hot pots, wiping sweat or tears from my cheeks. I use pieces of them to make special pillows or quilts that remind me daily of what an important person she was in my life.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's possible to pick just one! I have many favorites, but all are bright, intense and full of movement. Finding a way to use them that doesn't overwhelm the eye is always my biggest challenge!
ReplyDeleteMy sister passed away 7 years ago and left an enormous stash. My 4 other sisters and I divided the stash and last year I made A baby blanket with some of my fav fabric for my newest great nephew. It reminded all of us of our special sister when my niece opened the blanket at her shower!

I love Free Spirit Fabric. I have many fabrics from your designers in my stash, but my favorite is Up All Night by Anna Maria Horner. I've made two purses, a covered box, and I'm working on a quilt featuring this fabric. The square design is so different from anything else I've seen, and the colors blend with many things.
ReplyDeleteMy current favorite piece of fabric is some Christmas Winnie the Pooh knit I found right before my younger daughter was born (November 1995). I found a partial bolt of 10 yards on super clearance for $10. Over the years I have made close to a dozen gifts from it. Each of my daughters had nightgowns that Christmas. I've made receiving blankets, stuffed animals/toys, and a few hats to match. I'm down to about 1.5 yards now and it's a trip down memory lane everytime I see what remains. :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite piece of fabric is a small leftover scrap from a dress my mother made for me when I was in eight grade. It was a dress of beautiful, rich colors. My mom is now 88 years old! I still get a rush of love every time I hold that fabric in my hands!!

ReplyDeleteI have a 1 1/3 yard piece bought about 30 years age. I have used it to cover several things and tape them on(canvas for picture, footstool, chair seat cover) because I don't have the heart to cut it. I think I got it at an auction in a box of other fabric.It is a toile.
ReplyDeleteI went to my first quilt show with a friend, I knew nothing about fabrics then and showed very little interest in sewing but her enthusiasm was infectious and I ended buying some fabric including some Liberty which I didn't know at the time. I've collected a little more since then but am waiting for the perfect project to use them or maybe frame.
ReplyDeleteThese fabrics are so pretty! Some of my favorite fabrics are old - vintage, huge Scandinavian/Finnish prints I bought years and years (and years) ago. Some of the new Summersault prints remind me of these wonderful fabrics.

I don't have a favorite fabric, but these definitely appeal to me! they are so fresh and vivid and cheerful. I like going through and picking out things that bold and updated. Thank you for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteIs it even possible to have one favorite fabric? Blue is my favorite color so I tend to gravitate toward blues. Right now I'm loving kitchen themed prints like coffee cups and silverware and chickens and cupcakes.

I am a textile addict, I love yarn, thread, fabric, textures, colors, patterns. I am on a tight budget, so my fabric purchases are few and far between, but I have friends all over the SE United States that have given me fabric, in the hopes that I can "Do something with it." I may have the strangest, possibly the ugliest fabric collection on Earth, and I love it.
