Reason to Celebrate

From Melissa Peda - 100billionstars.com

September was National Sewing Month. If your month was anything like mine, you barely noticed it was September, let alone a month long national celebration of sewing.

For most of us, sewing is not an occasional or seasonal activity. We can come up with any excuse to sew, or in the absence of time or motivation, at least buy fabric in hopes of one day finding that time and motivation. Our stashes are proof of this simple fact--filled to overflowing, crammed into hidey holes or simply set out in plain sight. We spend a lot of time dreaming and drooling about one aspect or another of sewing. Celebrating sewing is our way of life.

If I had to pick just one thing to celebrate, it would be this: options! This is an amazing time for fabric lovers and sewists. We're spoiled for choice. With so many designers putting out beautiful, unique prints, there truly is something for everyone. No matter what your style, finding the right fabric is just a click away. With the right pattern, your favorite prints and a few stolen hours at the sewing machine, you're ready to show the world who you are. And if that changes from time to time, you can always sew up something new.

If you're feeling a little boho chic, grab a bit of Zandra Rhodes' Lace Mountain collection and download our free pattern for this floppybag. There's plenty of room for a change of clothes, groceries or whatever else you need to carry. Yet when it's empty, it takes up very little space.

The Iznik Collection from Snow Leopard Designs

The Iznik Collection is inspired by the decorative pottery and tiles that were produced in the town of Iznik in Anatolia, Turkey, between the 15th and 17th century. Iznik pottery is known throughout the world for its vivid cobalt and turquoise blue glazes and simple swirling patterns inspired by natural forms. The pottery was originally inspired by the Chinese blue and white Ming dynasty porcelain that was being brought along the Silk Road during the 15th century and had such a profound influence on the Ottoman court at that time.  The collection itself has been developed from a select group of glazed tiles and plates. As well as simple floral and geometric motifs, it includes such elements as the tree of life. This new collection from Snow Leopard continues to give a contemporary form to these great artistic traditions from the past, while allowing them to be enjoyed in our homes today.

Inspiration from Verna Mosquera

I am always amazed by the inspiration that daily life brings. My newest collection, Snapshot, grew from a simple moment in time when I looked across the table and realized that my one time little boy had grown into a young man. How did those years go by so quickly? I couldn’t stop looking. In that moment completely unnoticed by him I took a mental Snapshot of him that will live in my mind forever. When he left for school I moved into my studio and began my newest collection. It began with sepia as it is so representative of an old photograph. Then I added pink, such a natural companion. Next came aqua, green and a hint of yellow, all colors used in days gone by. As I worked the color palette images of vintage photographs came to mind. Those images then sparked other delicate ideas - roses, small birds and more. Bit by bit Snapshot grew into something both lovely and nostalgic. Of course being the true romantic that I am it will always remind me of my son.

Off Kilter - A Quilt Finish and Tutorial

Our good friend Melissa at Happy Quilting has shared this AMAZING tutorial for her Off Kilter Quilt and we are even more excited to share it with you!

Off Kilter - A Quilt Finish and Tutorial

I am so excited to get to share my newest quilt and tutorial. So let me just get right to it because I can't wait. I am calling this quilt, Off Kilter and I am so loving it!!!

Back at Spring Quilt Market I had the wonderful opportunity to chat with some of the ladies at Free Spirit Fabrics about doing some tutorials using their lovely fabrics. Thank you to FreeSpirit Fabrics for providing the fabrics for this tutorial!! I was instantly drawn to their new Denyse Schmidt Modern Solids. I mean, who wouldn't be when you see this box of yummy solid goodness. I really wanted to design something that highlighted the beautiful array of colors.

And that is how Off Kilter came to be. So, do you want to make your own Off Kilter quilt?? Let's get to that. The tutorial is written with the option of 2 sizes. A Lap that measures 59" x 70" or a Twin that measures 72" x 86". This quilt is so much fun to make and goes together so easy. You are going to have so much fun!!! So pick a size and let's get to it ;)
